Prosperity and Hardship – A Jewish Family Saga, Book 2
By Harold Emanuel
The Hermanski family doesn’t just witness history—they live it. From Prohibition‑era New York to the heartbreak of the Great Depression, the Hermanskis face bootleggers, political battles, rising antisemitism, and the fight to help Jewish refugees. Through every crisis, they return to the Shabbat table, holding fast to faith, tradition, and one another. Prosperity and Hardship is a sweeping, emotional saga of resilience and love.

Harold Emanuel, a moving storyteller, is in my MWA Critique group. This is the second book in his sweeping family saga. The first book, Aliyah, begins in Russia with the Hermanski family and their flight from persecution to their new life in New York City. Book 2, Prosperity and Hardship, continues that story through the Great Depression to the years leading up to World War II.
If you love historical fiction and epic family sagas, you’ll love this series. By the way, we’re currently workshopping book 3, which continues the story through the war years. Both books are available on Amazon.
More Updates
Upcoming Anthology: We’ve had an overwhelming response with great short stories for our Florida Gulf Coast chapter Sisters in Crime anthology, Passions, Palm Trees, and Paybacks. We’ve narrowed the cover design down to 3 excellent choices and the membership is in the middle of voting for their favorite image. I’ll share more information in my next newsletter, including the cover reveal.
Work in Progress
I’m ready to type my two favorite words - THE END! I’m putting the finishing touches on the final chapter of Book 3 in the Harrington House Bed and Breakfast series, and this one takes the Harrington family to their limits. When Aunt Vanessa comes home to find her husband shot and his office torn apart, Molly and the entire Harrington clan rally together in the face of a crisis that shakes their hometown, River Crest, to its core.
Detective Tony Shannon is abruptly pulled from the case and sent undercover just when Molly needs him most. As the investigation twists through hidden finances, dangerous secrets, and a single encrypted clue at the heart of it all, the killer edges closer—and the truth may cost more than anyone is prepared to pay.
Book 3 brings family loyalty, small‑town shadows, and rising danger together in a story where every choice matters.
This is what Tony and Molly might look like. What do you think?

Do you have any title ideas? If so, let me know. If your title is chosen, you’ll receive a special gift box.
I finished watching The Lioness, loved it! The Love Hypothesis came out this past week on Prime Video. It’s a classic fake dating romance, and I really enjoyed the movie.
As usual, I have a print book, a Kindle book, and an audiobook all going at the same time. What is your favorite media for reading?
This past month I’ve read: The Date by T. H. Murdock is a British mystery about a man wrongly accused of murdering a date. I didn’t really see the twist coming. Gray After Dark by Noelle W. Ihli is a thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat, plus the book is so pretty with sprayed edges, a new trend. The author gave a keynote speech at Killer Nashville, and I wanted to get her book. The View from Lake Como by Adriana Trigiani is our October book club selection. It made me want to go to Italy…. Like now! Hell Hath No Fury is the latest Detective Honeywell mystery. I know Annette Dashofy, and I enjoy her Matthias and Emma adventures. The Secrets We Hide is Karin Slaughter’s latest North Falls thriller. Slaughter never disappoints. I listened to The Shadow Friends by Tess Gerritsen. I love a story about retired spies who still have it going on. Finally, I just read a novella by A. M. Stuart, Christmas at the Convent, a Harriet Gordon Mystery. The author says it’s the last one in the series, set in Singapore in the early 20th century, before women got the vote. I hope it’s not the last. I enjoy these exotic historical mysteries and the Curran and Harriet characters.

One last thing….. I went to my 55th Lakota High School class reunion in Cincinnati last week. It was great seeing my old friends, especially since I live in Florida now. While I was in town, my daughter, Tina, and I went to a beautiful exhibit at the Cincinnati Art Museum, All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins by Yayoi Kusama. It was awesome and will be there through October 18th. Afterward, we had a delicious lunch at the cafe, complete with mimosas.

Until next time, keep on reading and writing.
If you have a moment and liked my books, please leave a review on Amazon and/or Goodreads. Authors depend on reviews to get the word out about their books. It doesn’t have to be long—just a sentence or two, which is greatly appreciated.
